Outdoor living space in coastal Delaware

Custom Outdoor Shower Enclosures

A practical addition for any coastal Delaware home. Rinse off sand and salt before heading inside — built with durable materials and designed to match your outdoor space.

A Must-Have for Beach Town Homeowners

Outdoor showers are one of the most practical investments for homes in Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach, Lewes, Fenwick Island, and other Sussex County coastal communities. They keep sand, salt, and sunscreen out of your home while adding a luxury feel to your outdoor space.

For vacation rental properties, an outdoor shower is almost expected by renters — and it directly protects interior flooring, plumbing, and HVAC systems from beach debris and moisture. For year-round residents, it's the convenience of rinsing off the dog, hosing down after yard work, or cooling off on a hot day without tracking anything inside.

With over 5,400 monthly searches nationally for "outdoor shower enclosure," this is a feature that homebuyers actively look for when shopping in coastal markets.

Built for Coastal Conditions

We build with materials specifically chosen for salt air, humidity, and UV exposure.

Cedar

Western red cedar is the most popular choice for outdoor shower enclosures. It naturally resists rot, insects, and moisture. Weathers to a silver-gray patina that complements coastal architecture. Can be sealed or left natural. Warm, organic appearance that blends with any outdoor space.

Composite

Composite lumber offers the look of wood without the maintenance. No sealing, staining, or worrying about rot. Modern composites resist fading, staining, and mold. Available in a wide range of colors and wood-grain textures. Higher upfront cost but virtually zero ongoing maintenance — strong choice for vacation rentals.

PVC & Vinyl

PVC and vinyl enclosures deliver a clean, white or off-white aesthetic. Completely waterproof and immune to rot, insects, and salt damage. Easy to clean with a hose. The most weather-resistant option for oceanfront properties where salt exposure is highest. Lightweight and durable.

Where to Put Your Outdoor Shower

Location matters more than most homeowners expect. The right placement affects privacy, drainage, water access, and how well the shower integrates with your daily routine.

Near the back or side entry is the most common placement — it catches people coming from the beach, pool, or yard before they enter the house. For homes with pools, placing the shower between the pool area and the house creates a natural rinse station.

Drainage is critical. Sussex County's sandy soil actually helps — it drains faster than clay. But the shower still needs a proper gravel base or dry well to handle the volume. For properties near the water table, we may need to tie into an existing drainage line. We assess drainage conditions during every site visit.

Plumbing access dictates how easy (and affordable) installation will be. Closer to the house means shorter plumbing runs and lower cost for hot water. For detached or poolside showers, we plan the hot water supply route during design.

Privacy depends on your property layout and neighbors. We design enclosure walls to provide full privacy while maintaining natural ventilation. For poolside showers, a partial-height wall or lattice screen may be all that's needed.

Outdoor Shower FAQ

A complete outdoor shower enclosure with hot and cold water typically costs $3,000 to $8,000 installed, depending on materials, plumbing complexity, and features. A basic cold-water-only setup runs less. Cedar enclosures fall in the mid-range, while composite and PVC options cost more for materials but less for long-term maintenance.

Requirements vary by municipality and HOA. Many Sussex County communities require a plumbing permit when connecting to the home's water supply, especially for hot water. Drainage may also require review depending on proximity to wetlands or waterways. We check requirements for your specific location as part of our design process.

In Sussex County's climate, outdoor showers are primarily a three-season feature (spring through fall). For winter, exposed plumbing needs to be winterized — we install shut-off valves and drain ports so you can easily drain the lines before freezing temperatures arrive. The enclosure structure itself is built to withstand winter weather year-round.

Minimal. Cedar enclosures benefit from annual sealing or staining (or you can let them weather naturally). Composite and PVC require only occasional cleaning with a hose. Hardware should be checked annually for corrosion — we use stainless steel and marine-grade fixtures to minimize this. The drain bed should be cleared of debris seasonally.
